My current panel plan
The ethos behind my planned avionics set-up is function, size, and simplicity. The XL fuel tank behind the seats will replace the normal baggage area, which means I’d like to create two little storage areas on either side of the panel to compensate as much as possible.
It’s worth remembering that my Skyranger will be constrained by UK rules, which will limit me to Day-VFR. As such, there’s not much point installing fancy (expensive) avionics. Low operating altitudes also make it somewhat pointless to install conventional navigation equipment such as VOR/DME, ADF or ILS transceivers. I’ll make do with redundant GPS receivers. And a chart.
At the moment, I’m planning to utilise Kanardia avionics. Flylight have been working with Kanardia, and installing their avionics in Skyrangers, for years. They are high quality, and excellent value for money.
PRIMARY
A Kanardia Horis multifunction artificial horizon display provides the usual primary flight information. It will also interface with a Kanardia Amigo and autopilot system.
A Garmin G5 multifunction artificial horizon will serve as back-up – including independent GPS position.
ENGINE
Given the long-distance, engine-intensive sectors, it’s important that engine parameters are clearly displayed, and easily monitored. The Kanardia Digi provides a clear and completely customisable display. It interfaces with the Horis and Amigo/AP via CAN bus.
COMMS
A compact Trig transponder will provide certified ADS-B out. A FlightAware system (or similar) will assist with ADS-B in, and additional conspicuity.
A compact Trig radio will be fitted. When required, a secondary (and potentially even HF) radio will be carried, along with satphone.
Circuit protection will be provided via circuit breakers (rather than blade fuses commonly used). They’re a little heavier, but are reliable and easier to reset if required.
Circuitry will be kept as simple as possible. A relay-controlled master circuit will power a main bus for things like the Digi, lights and USB boards. A secondary, switched, avionics bus will be installed for all other avionics.

Current config for my Kanardia Digi. Plenty of space left for the parameters I’ve forgotten…!
